On April 24, a Washington Post reporter rode along with volunteers of Meeting at the Door, a program run by Yokefellowship Prison Ministry. The reporter observed firsthand how volunteers support individuals as they transition back into society after incarceration. The experience provided insight into the challenges faced by returning citizens and the vital role that our ministry plays in their successful reentry process.
Volunteers Lisa Perry and Mark met just released returning citizen John Collins at the door of Mahanoy SCI. The three of them joined Freddie Nole, Sam Whitehouse and Washington Post reporter William Wan at Leesport for lunch. Lisa and Freddie prayed, and Mr. Collins ordered his first meal in freedom in five years – chicken wings, french fries and ice tea. The YPM team shared encouragement and suggestions with Collins as he was interviewed for an article that Wan is working on publishing later this summer.
Freddie, Sam, Mr. Wan and Mr. Collins drove to a half-way house in Chester, gave Collins clothes and took him inside his new temporary home. Two very accommodating staff members met them, and they said goodbye to a grateful John Collins.
Wan was so interested in the concept of Meeting at the Door that he came back for another ride along on May 11 to meet returning citizen Franklin Hons at Phoenix SCI.
