Beyond Any Earthly Price

When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!” But Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought! You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God. Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.” – Acts 8:18-23

God’s gifts, blessings, and the presence of the Holy Spirit are not mere commodities that can be bought or earned, nor can we manipulate or control the work of the Holy Spirit through material means. They are given freely by God’s grace, reminding us that our relationship with Him is based on love and grace alone and in no way transactional.

Looking at the Scripture passage above, we might look at Simon and become quick to judge him. But it’s worth reminding ourselves that we can and sometimes do fall into the same trap.

How many of us expect blessings, protection, or answers to prayers in exchange for good deeds, church attendance, or financial offerings? While these practices can be expressions of faith, they should never be used as some form of currency to buy God’s favor. That’s basically the same as what Simon was attempting. In fact, Jesus criticized the Pharisees for this very thing, pointing out that while they followed the letter of the law, their hearts were far from God (Matt. 23:27-28).

Peter’s response to Simon highlights the importance of our hearts’ condition before God. Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21).

Today’s Thought

In what ways do I try to earn or control God’s blessings through my deeds, actions, or giving?
